Brainspotting (BSP) is a 21st Century, relational, highly attuned therapy that is extremely effective for healing trauma, releasing mental blocks, and maximizing creative and physical potential.

Brainspotting offers people the opportunity to receive immediate and lasting relief from anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, accidents, creative and sports performance challenges, chronic illness, OCD, and grief, as well as relationship issues and beliefs which have a negative impact on their lives. It simultaneously helps them connect to internal resources, talents, and life skills. With its growing research base and reputation for efficacy and rapid healing, Brainspotting is quickly becoming one of the most sought after therapy treatments available today.

is BSP different from talk therapy?

Recent developments in neuroscience reveal that painful or traumatic memories can be “swept under the rug” by the brain - getting stored in the non-verbal, non-cognitive subcortical brain, where they are not directly confronted yet continue to negatively affect how we feel and function every day. Generally, talk therapy is helpful in engaging the neocortex, our thinking, conscious brain. Brainspotting bridges the gap between mind and body by providing access to the subcortical system where trauma and distress lurk.

Brainspotting harnesses neuroplasticity for natural healing. The therapist guides clients toward creation of new neural pathways, allowing them to rewire areas of the brain where past trauma, hurt, or outdated belief systems reside. Clients improve their mind-body connection in a way that promotes clarity, confidence, and creativity.

How does BSP work?

We use our eyes to orient us in myriad ways: to recall and remember things; to take a break when we are overwhelmed; to reset and relax; to not think about something upsetting. This is an inbuilt system for restoring inner balance and addressing discomfort. Brainspotting taps into this existing system, creating change and healing at the neurological level by focusing on where a person is looking. Through an integration of EMDR and Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting uses eye gaze and body awareness to bypass the brain’s areas of thought and language and access traumatic memories that may be concealed from the conscious mind. The therapist guides the client to move their gaze across their field of vision, as both therapist and client attune to the client’s somatic cues. The client’s feeling of somatic activation is used to locate hot spots in the visual field that trigger emotionally intense memories. Once these spots are located, the therapist assists as the client maintains a gaze while mindfully observing their internal experience.

What is a Brainspot?

The ancients knew that the eyes give us a window to something deep within consciousness. In the 21st century, we have discovered that in a literal sense, our eyes are a gateway to material held deep within our brains, beyond language and logic. A "Brainspot" is the eye position correlating to the energetic/emotional activation within the brain of a traumatic event or emotionally charged issue. Because our eyes connect directly to the subcortical, mid-brain, source of intuition and subconscious thoughts and behaviors, Brainspotting allows us to pinpoint where trauma, anxiety, depression or behavioral problems are held in the brain, and to release these unpleasant, stored experiences by processing through the visual field. This supports the resolution of painful or traumatic experiences and fears so that we can embrace a new sense of freedom, vibrancy, and empowerment, and many clients experience deep and rapid healing.

I have personally experienced the benefits of Brainspotting. I was able to relax the grip of a burdensome perspective and its associated emotions, both of which I had carried a long time.

Brainspotting can also be very effective in helping to enhance creativity and performance. The benefits to this resolution and healing are many. As well as feeling more healthy and at peace in life generally, many clients find that creativity and confidence flow freely when inner obstacles and blocks are dissolved. Whether you want to improve public speaking, athletic performance, stage performance, or efficacy on the job or in other areas, Brainspotting can balance and enhance your brain’s functioning, resulting in decreased stress and anxiety, improved mental clarity, performance, and new capacities.
